Green Initiative at St. Peter

“Preservation of the environment, promotion of sustainable development and particular attention to climate change are matters of grave concern for the entire family. No nation or business sector can ignore the ethical implications present in all economic and social development. With increasing clarity scientific research demonstrates that the impact of human actions in any one lace or region can have worldwide effects.”
—Pope Benedict XVI, September 1, 2007

Pope Benedict XVI and the Catholic Coalition on Climate Change are emphasizing the importance of the role of Catholics in environmental issues, such as Global Climate Change. Many moral issues surround the proper care of the environment, such as prudence, poverty, and the common good. As Catholics, we are encouraged to be environmentally conscious because negative man-made effects on the environment not only affect the creatures living within it and ourselves but other individuals as well. For example, when we release harmful chemicals into the water supply or simply throw litter onto the ground, we not only pollute our earth’s land and dwindling fresh water supply, but we also affect poorer people who depend on that currently polluted water supply or piece of land. To reverse such detrimental effects on our planet and on our brothers and sisters, we, as a parish and as individuals, can Go Green.

Did you know that St. Peter is in the process of Going Green, or becoming self-sustainable and conservative, in order to reduce its impact on the environment?

Nathalie McCrate and Lillian McBee are two LIFETEEN members and long-time parishioners that are working with the Parish Staff in the attempt to Go Green. Along with their creation of a “Green Tips” column in the weekly bulletin, the girls have also initiated a recycling program and created this Green Link on St. Peter’s website. Such actions will aid St. Peter in its effort to Go Green. To discover more information about St. Peter’s Green Initiative, the importance of Going Green, and how you can help St. Peter’s Church and the environment check out this web page.

Thank you for your time and assistance because without our parishioners St. Peter would cease to exist.
